North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief grew from a concept in 1979 to the first response in 1984. Since then, NCBM Disaster Relief volunteers have prepared over 3.5 million hot meals and removed debris or repaired over 16,000 homes. In addition, we have met the needs of thousands by providing temporary childcare, laundry services, hot showers and spiritual care. Men and women from all walks of NC Baptist life volunteer to offer help in times of need.
PHILOSOPHY OF NC BAPTIST DISASTER RELIEF The motivation behind N C Baptist Men disaster relief efforts can be summed up by looking at biblical accounts of Jesus teaching and healing, such as: His feeding the multitudes, the parable of the Good Samaritan, and His urging us to minister to others in a variety of ways (Matthew 25:32-46). Baptist Men Disaster Relief is Christian love in action, meeting urgent needs of hurting humanity in a crisis. It is meeting those needs with loving care and timely response as James 2:15-16 instructs us to do. There is neither hidden agenda nor ulterior motive. Jesus often used teaching sessions to heal, or healing to teach. He once ended a teaching session by feeding 5,000 listeners. When He sent out the twelve disciples, He instructed them to teach and heal, giving first priority to teaching. However, when He sent forth the seventy, He reversed the order: healing and teaching. In His wisdom, our Lord knew when to use one ministry to accomplish another and also when to do one and not the other. Our disaster relief logo incorporates both kinds of ministry exemplified by Christ – physical and spiritual. PURPOSE OF THE DISASTER RELIEF MINISTRY The purpose of NC Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Ministry is to relieve human suffering caused by disasters by providing among other things: hot meals, debris removal, child care and family assistance. We work with various disaster organizations in order to achieve this goal: American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, NC Emergency Management, and a variety of groups.
MISSION STATEMENT The commitment of NCBM Disaster Relief Ministry is to enable and ensure every NC Baptist who so desires to respond to lessen the needs of hurting people caused by disaster. Disaster Relief Ministry provides organization, equipment, and strategy for committed volunteers to help affected individuals/families rebuild their lives and homes. Ways We Respond: • Administration • Assessment • Chaplaincy • Communications • Childcare • International Search and Rescue • Laundry • Logistics • Mass feeding • Recovery (debris removal) • Shower • Water
TRAINING Preparation is the best form of disaster response. We require training for all participants. However, periodically we allow “non-trained” participants, especially in recovery. Our preference, of course, is that everyone go through a training in order to understand the guidelines for response: policies, procedures, safety, etc. Click here for 2007 training information.
DONATIONS: -Virtually 100% of NCBM Disaster Relief is funded by donations. If you would like to support this ministry please Mail a check, designated for Disaster Relief Fund, to: North Carolina Baptist Men P. O. Box 1107 Cary, NC 27512-1107
